How to Distinguish Your Business through Customer Service

We experience daily an arid world of customer service. Author Micah Solomon shows us all how to be an oasis of exceptional customer service that can distinguish us from our competition. If everyone has learned the golden rule, why are customers treated so poorly? High-Tech, High-Touch Customer Service provides business owners and managers with specifics to get their entire organization treating customers exceptionally; so the customers will be retained and the organization will profit.I found the author's discussion of trends affecting customer behavior on target and very thought-provoking. I recommend that everyone think strategically about how these trends affect one's own business. The discussions about anticipatory customer service are important, as I often see companies with mission statements about "exceeding customers' expectations." However, these companies need to learn from Mr. Solomon about how to create a system of standards in order to... 5/5 Roderick Wolfson, Wolfson Architect (Ardmore, PA) - See all my reviews This review is from: High-Tech, High-Touch Customer Service: Inspire Timeless Loyalty in the Demanding New World of Social Commerce (Hardcover) We experience daily an arid world of customer service. Exceptional customer service in the high-tech age

After loving Micah Solomon's previous book, Exceptional Service, Exceptional Profit, Ieagerly picked up his new one, High-Tech, High-Touch Customer Service, whichapplies the principals of the earlier work specifically to the ever-changing world oftechnology. A key point of the book is made early on: "What was plenty fast this timelast year seems draggy now to the very same customers because of changing expectationsbrought by mobile technology, social media-induced restlessness...and other factors."In thirteen chapters the author lays out step-by-step procedures to anticipate a customer'sdesires and capture and keep their loyalty in the e-connected world. He makes thepoint of the importance of consciously creating a corporate culture - competitorscan "steal" your product and imitate your processes but your corporate culture shouldremains unique. This is a book that makes sense for not only those involved in customer service, but for anybody in countless situations.

EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE, EXCEPTIONAL PROFIT, coauthored by Micah Solomon and Leonardo Inghilleri, was one of my favorite business books from last year.So when I had the chance to get hold of an advance copy of Solomon's latest book, HIGH-TECH, HIGH TOUCH CUSTOMER SERVICE (AMACOM), I jumped at the opportunity--especially because I so much like the premise . . . it is similar to what I always tell my students; i.e., that marketing is not just high tech, it's also high touch. The author points out that today's customers still both want and expect good customer service . . . however, because so many of them are time-strapped and screen-addicted, they want it delivered differently than in the past . . . they also will complain more vociferously if not happy, and they'll let the whole world know. What I perhaps liked best about this book were the many real examples that were used; for example:* Due to a dusting of snow on the runway during a... 5/5 Blaine Greenfield "eclectic reader" (Belle Meade, NJ) - See all my reviews, April 26, 2012

Bought the book at Haslam's in St. Pete in the very early 80s. The ideas here just keep popping up in later books/magazines with different justifications for inclusion. AS UNIQUE AND ORIGINAL A NOVEL AS YOU ARELIKELY TO READ!!!

"Hedgeland, an urban fantasy of time travel. Dr April Neuland, a Professor of Ancient Languages turned non-fiction writer, has been plagued by dreams all her life, dreams of her past life in the Otherworld" A brief intro into a magnifencent adventure- a novel so original in content and plot, that it is difficult categorize it- which is a major compliment to the wonderful writer Ann Nyland. Perhaps "Speculative-techno-fantasy thiller"?? Regardless- there are some books, so well writen, so unique, they do not need a specific genre, and Hedgeland is one of those. Through the brilliant and lively prose of ms. Nyland, the reader feels a deep connection to the main character : Dr April Neuland and a strong sesire to follow her as she travels to various parts of her life and beyond. As this appears to be the first in a series of novels, readers will wait with great anticipation for the next Dr April Neuland adventure!A JAMES MASON COMMUNITY BOOK CLUB MUST READRick... 5/5 Richard S. I couldn't stop reading it - I was drawn into those worlds and times until I was a part of them. As an English & History teacher who has a Masters in Education and an interest in science as well as being a science fiction/fantasy devotee, I feel well qualified to say this is a great read. The other reviews will give you more of an idea of what the book is about, I just want to say I loved losing myself in this book and I'm already hungry for another instalment of the Hedgecraft Sequence. I am familiar with the excellent non-fiction works written by Dr Nyland and it is really exciting to see her switch to writing fiction using her remarkable skills, knowledge and writing ability. I was particularly fascinated by the alternate universes as I've been reading about the current scientific theories proposing the possibility of adjacent or colliding universes, so it was a remarkable coincidence for me to come across a novel dealing with the very leading edge of science. Gripping Fun Read

It took me a little while to get into this book. The book shifts dimensions with every chaper...from present day to her past life and then to a parrellel dimension. It is hard to keep track of where things are going on, but the book was an extremely entertaining read.I loved a lot of the Doctor Who references in the parts with the parellel dimension...As a Who fangirl, it was fun to see David Tennant, Matt Smith and the Daleks mentioned as well as many of the companions from over the years. And if you are a fan of Who, this book will make a little more sense. the Kiste is basically the same thing as a TARDIS or at least it does much of the same thing, including the wibbly-wobbly timey-whimey stuff.Ann's characters were well developed and considering this story had 3 sets of main characters, that's quite an acheivement, though Caridiwen and April are linked through Worthling. Once I got the jist of how the story was being told, everything flowed really nicely... 4/5 Andrea J. Guy "moodylady" (charleroi, pa) - See all my reviews, May 24, 2011

Wealth of Information- Ignore it at your own peril!

It's true that this book is dated. It was written in 1992, and covers NOTHING after 1991, except for thinly disguised attempts to make the book appear more recent- the copyright is 1997, and there are new pages added with info on Yahoo and Netscape. That said, even if there was another good book on this subject out there, published in 1999, I would still recommend this book. The reason is simple. The information it contains is too important to miss. The book is very well-researched and well-written. If the authors did come out with a second edition that covered the 90s companies- in particular the dotcoms- I would still recommend buying this book, unless the second edition includes (or a meaningful comparison with) the information contained in this book, to put things in perspective. While looking at the valuations of dotcoms would be very interesting and useful, I believe you'll get a skewed picture unless you also have the pre-dotcom era data, to give you a realistic... 4/5 Murali Krishna Devarakonda "Agile Entrepreneur" (Cupertino, CA, USA) - See all my reviews, November 29, 1999

    A big disappointment

If the title was "Managing and Financing Your Startup", I would not have been disappointed. It seems that Nesheim's central message is to find an experienced CEO, and push constantly to get financing.Nesheim is so insistent on this point that he basically ignores the critical, fundamental question of market assessment: how to determine whether the product is desirable and whether the company has a true "unfair advantage". It seems that Nesheim is more focused on a successful IPO and exit for the funders than on developing a viable business. As I read the book, I thought of companies like Webvan. Webvan would be successful in Nesheim's view: experienced management, seasoned directors, and well financed. But history showed that they had a product that was too expensive for the marketplace, and they are gone. While Nesheim does not cite Webvan, he does offer other success stories that have fallen far from their initial valuations: DoubleClick, Netscape, and... 2/5 Gregory Glockner (Bellevue, WA USA) - See all my reviews, July 14, 2004

A case study in and of itself

Nesheim's book is Nesheim's business. He has written a primer on entrepreneurship, from the VC perspective, and is providing basic information that can be garnered for free from the Internet or any small business development center or university incubator in the country. Among other texts, this one may prove useful in the classroom for the purpose of critical analysis, but it can be misleading to entrepreneurs who need to have a fuller picture. Unimpressive are such entries as: ". . .a famous university study showed that sixty-nine disk drive start-up companies got rolling during the heyday of the personal computer, around 1983. . .(p. 45). Nesheim also takes a VC stance against non-disclosure agreements between VC's and their prospective clients. There are plenty of us in the technology start up business who vehemently disagree. The NDA is a useful tool, not necessarily to protect from infringement as much as to signify good faith. They can be, and have been enforceable as well... 1/5 0, January 9, 2001

    RIDICULOUS!

This thing must be from Mars! The picture makes it look flat but it actually has a rounded, oblique shape that looks like some type of NASA project. It is very bright and durable as others have described and you can toggle through hi, low and strobe. When you stop for a second or so on a setting the next selection will then turn the light off. If you leave it on it will shut down in 30 minutes. The metal space ship looking body is durable and held together with 4 screws... one of mine fell out. No moisture seal is present. It is the heaviest, brightest, most durable keychain light I have found. 2016 batts can be expensive though and if you use this light frequently the batteries will expire quickly - the trade off for such a bright torch. So try and find a deal on a multipack of batteries. You can get one of these at Target for $6 change and they sell a two pack of batts for $5... makes sense to just by another light and have a spare! Impressively Bright

Only had this about a day and wanted to say how surprised I am with the brightness. On high, it's like a small flashlight. I had no trouble illuminating the far wall in a three car garage. Low seems enough for most closer in tasks and is brighter than you'd think. Helps conserve batteries, also. Beam type provides plenty of usable flood around the center. Interface is easy to use with a good feeling push button switch you don't have to hold down. I doubt it will get accidently turned on in your pocket or purse. Overall build quality appears solid. Keyring is of medium quality...easy enough to attach a heavier duty one. I'm a little concerned with battery life, but the trade-off for brightness seems worth it. You can save a lot on batteries here on amazon. I purchased two 5 packs of Maxell for under six dollars and no shipping charges. It takes two CR2016 button cells and you'll need a very small phillips head screwdriver. 5/5 lilguy (California USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Energizer High Tech LED Keychain Light with 3 Modes (Sports) Only had this about a day and wanted to say how surprised I am with the brightness. Super little flashlight!

Nice little flashlight! It is 2" long, including the bulb protrusion. Very solid. No worries about this flashlight falling apart! I always keep it in my pocket - just in case - but don't use it as an actual keychain. There is a rubberized button switch which you use to toggle through the settings, from high intensity to low intensity to flashing and then back to off. After a second or two, you are fixed on your selected setting and, thus, it will turn off when you click again. This means that you don't have to cycle through all the other settings in order to turn it off from the high intensity beam: you just go directly to off.Highly recommended. 5/5 Ex-pat Brit (Baltimore, MD) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Light, comfortable, good fit, don't hold up well over time

They fit well, are as comfortable as sneakers from day one but probably require some break-in before hiking. I usually have to wear gel inserts but have not had to with these. They are not advertised as water resistant, but I stepped in some mud that turned out to be real soft and one foot sunk in up to the boot tops. A few hours later I hosed off the muddy boot and it came fairly clean. No mud or even moisture inside. They look really good, and make my size 11-1/2 feet look a little smaller.Time will tell if these are good on a long hike. I'll update. This is my first pair of Hi Tec boots for myself.Update Nov 11, 2010 Have put quite a few miles on them including some rough terrain, still holding up well. Some wear on the soft parts of the soul and stitching starting to come loose. One problem is that laces come untie often no matter how tight I tie them. Need to remember to get some different laces.Update Nov 2, 2011 They are pretty much worn out... 4/5 R. Devinney (Silver City, NM) - See all my reviews, August 2, 2010

Good Boot, but low Durability Soles

I've put an estimated 250 miles into these boots, about 200 of which hiking and less than 50 of that carrying a full pack.In general this is a pretty good shoe. They broke-in easily and are pretty comfortable. I've found them flexible enough to use as a year-round hiker. They are not so hot as to be unbearably uncomfortable in the summer, and they are thick enough and water-resistant enough to wear in the snow. You can lace them all the way up for lateral support or skip the last two sets of hooks for greater comfort. They're ugly, but at least they clean easily. On the other hand, they're not very durable. The sole is relatively thick and stiff, but it's also slippery and wore out very quickly. The soles are almost completely smooth at this point--I would hope to get in at least twice as many miles before this becomes a problem. I am also getting some sole separation. 3/5 Hank Peace (-) - See all my reviews This review is from: Hi-Tec Men's Midland Mid Light Hiking Boot (Apparel) I've put an estimated 250 miles into these boots, about 200 of which hiking and less than 50 of that carrying a full pack.In general this is a pretty good shoe. Second Pair Did The Trick

The first pair of these had to be returned because one of the speed laces broke the first time we used the boots. The second pair has preformed well. My son is using these for Boy Scout events and is happy with the boots. Pretty good boot for the price. 4/5 Robert J. Lewis "Bob6662" (Rochester, NY) - See all my reviews, August 12, 2011

Engineering Your Start-Up: A Guide for the High-Tech Entrepreneur (2nd Edition)

    Book (Professional Publications, Inc.)

    Rating (45 reviews):

a must read in combination with others

More substantive and more "specific" then any other such book I have read. Much more useful then "High Tech Startup" by Nesheim. Very enjoyable read without constantly reminding you that you might lose your house <so what ?>. One negative: very much written as a guide for engineers with an idea and no business knowledge; this means it lacks some depth when it comes to marketing issues. 5/5 David Gurgel (Roseland, New Jersey United States) - See all my reviews, August 29, 1999

Read This Before Visiting a VC

This book's special expertise is about designing the financing of your startup!A few years ago when I did a business plan for a technology start-up, the first edition of this book was my source for planning for equity participation for founders, employees, VCs, and the public from founding through IPO. When this second edition came out, I bought it to pass along to a friend in the early stages of a startup. If you are a technical member of a startup, you must read this unless you are already sophisticated in the financing of startups. Don't talk to a VC until you have studied this book. The title is the key. "Engineers" and other technical types will find this a quick and interesting book. And if you are going to play "Monopoly," you must at least know the basic rules first. This is how the game is played in Silicon Valley! If you don't, you will not pass GO and will not collect $200. 5/5 Sachmo - See all my reviews This review is from: Engineering Your Start-Up: A Guide for the High-Tech Entrepreneur (2nd Edition) (Paperback) This book is a complete waste of time for anyone seriously attempting to start their own business. I have a hard time understanding why this book is so highly rated. It offers very little usable information, in fact some of it might be damaging.Let me try and be a little more specific. There is not much actually written in this book as to the CORE aspects of developing a business. I think a lot more time could be spent talking about developing a business model, finding the right product-market fit, gathering real data to support whether you are actually on to something or whether your business idea is just a figment of your imagination... Technically speaking there is SOMETHING written in the book about the core development of your business, but it is so piecemeal as to really be useless (perhaps 10 pages of this sort of material tops).By comparison, the author spends over 100 pages (!) of material talking about stock options, vesting schedules,...
